OFFICIAL: How to Host Matches (Listen Server)

OFFICIAL GUIDE
HOSTING A MATCH FOR STEAM FRIENDS

Hosting a match is easy. Click MULTIPLAYER -> HOST MATCH and then configure your match in the following menu. Once you're done, your match will show as a server to your Steam friends in the game's server browser. Congratulations, you've just started your first listen server (aka the hosted match).

Besides TOXIKK's in-game server browser, your Steam friends can also join your hosted match through the Steam friends list or via invites using the Steam in-game overlay interface etc. You can also assign a password to make sure only friends knowing the password, can join your match.

HOSTING PUBLIC MATCHES

Besides the simple way of hosting matches described above, there are also other, more complex ways to host matches. E.g. if you want to host public matches on your listen server that reach people beyond your Steam friends list, your server needs to get published to all server browsers.

To make this happen, you need to configure your router (you know... dat thing that connects you to the interwebz) to FORWARD PORT 27015 UDP. And... the problem is, we can't really tell you how to do that, as there are bazillions of different routers out there. But for a start, THIS seems to be a useful general guide about forwarding ports with a huge list of available routers.

TROUBLESHOOTING FOR PUBLIC MATCH HOSTING

A - People can find my server but can't join it.
On some reagions on earth people have issues with SteamSockets. Either you ask one of your friends to host the match instead or you can disable SteamSockets in the serveroptions and forward additionally port 27015 UDP and 7777 UDP in your router.

B - The ping to my friends is really high and it's awefully lagging.
Its possible that your ISP has another router added between your pc and the rest of the world. This prevents the game from creating a direct connetion between the players. (and falls back to Steam relay (proxy) server) Again, ask one of your friends to host the match or ask your ISP to remove the second "security" router from your connection. ;)

Re: Playerbase is emptying too fast.

Team Arena is happening on community servers only at the moment. About the SC restrictions: FEPs can turn off match-making after 1.0.2, so that should bring some more people onto the SC 1-12 servers. But again... it's up to the players to travel to 1-12s or to stick to "protected" realms.

[NEWS] PR & Marketing Activities

UPDATE #1, OCTOBER 05:
OUTCOME

So far more than 300k people downloaded TOXIKK and we got two METACRITIC relevant reviews (80% from Eurogamer.pl and 90% from Multiplayer.it). Current user reviews are at 8.9.

There may be more METACRITIC relevant reviews coming from major news sites. We will update this post.

ORIGINAL POST BELOW:
----------------------------------------------------------------

PR AND MARKETING ACTIVITIES

We've already posted some info about our recent PR and marketing activities. Now, that trailers are released, 1.0 and the "Free Edition" are out and even the first update (1.01) is live, we still get approached by people asking when our marketing activities are going to start and why our presence in the gaming press is almost nonexistent.

And yea,... it's probably right that you can never do enough marketing. But for the sake of giving an overview of our release accompanying activities, I'd like to put up this list, so that people who yell "Do more marketing!" at us, can see at a glance what was done so far (and what results we got).

Our marketing strategy for the launch of TOXIKK, primarily relied on showing off as much as possible of the game (real-time, in-game footage) in professionally produced trailers and videos. All videos were released in a time frame of around four to five weeks circling the game's release date.

RELEASED VIDEOS

01. RELEASE DATE REVEAL TEASER
Published on Aug 15, (~24k views on YouTube, ~20k views on Facebook)

02. MAKING OF TOXIKK, pt.1: THE WEAPONS
Published on Aug 19, (~5.5k views on YouTube, ~16k views on Facebook)

03. MAKING OF TOXIKK, pt.2: MAP DESIGN
Published on Aug 27, (~3.8k views on YouTube, ~10k views on Facebook)

04. OFFICIAL: TOXIKK MOVEMENT TUTORIAL
Published on Sep 03, (~39.5k views on YouTube, ~16k views on Facebook)

05. 1.0 RELEASE & FREE EDITION TRAILER
Published on Sep 13, (~17k views on YouTube, ~13k views on Facebook)

06. MAKING OF TOXIKK, pt.3: THE VEHICLES
Published on Sep 20, (~5.5k views on YouTube, n/a on Facebook)

OTHER ACTIVITIES

01. Feed Social Media (FB, Twitter, Reddit etc.) with every important news item
02. Reach out to major YouTubers to ask them for co-op
03. Send out press releases with every important date and trailer release
04. Professionalize TOXIKK.com website to AAA standards
05. Release FREE EDITION on Launch Day
06. Always in touch with the Community (e.g. through our Discord Live Chat)

OUTCOME (SO FAR)

So far, the outcome of our PR & marketing activites is poor. Keep in mind that we're an indie team and what major effort it was to produce all that stuff listed and stay in direct touch with the community, while simultaniously finalizing the game.

For whatever reason, the press didn't pick the title up at all (hat tip to PC Gamer and RPS for being the exception to the rule) and despite the fact that we're sitting first row in the all hot and comin' back-to-the-roots gaming hype train, TOXIKK did not receive a single review from a site listed at METACRITICS. In fact, until today, METACRITIC didn't even list TOXIKK as being released (said TBD as release date, although the game was released over a week ago). Hence all the old material on that page (over a year old trailers and screenshots... are we supposed to update them? And if so... how?).

The real sad thing is that people seem to only blame us for "not bringing in more people". I have no idea what else we can do, if ALL of the METACRITIC listed sites decide to skip the game. In Germany (our home), TOXIKK wasn't even listed on the September release schedule of the biggest gaming news sites.

Don't get us wrong. We're absolutely not saying that our game deserves to be reviewed by major gaming sites (no, there are plenty of other indie games sharing the fate of being ignored by the major press), but the next time you yell at us: "Bring in more players!" or even give TOXIKK a negative user review because of its population, you may want to remember, that we can't be blamed for everything...

In the meantime, remember to leave a user review at METACRITIC... ;)

Did you try asking nicely?
Like, with press release for them and stuff. Cuz most likely never heard of Toxikk yet.

This is a copy paste from what I replied to a post on Steam, regarding "Did you try asking nicely?":

Sharkster wrote:Well, we did (and still do) a lot of marketing. We had awesome reach with our trailers and "Making of Toxikk" video series... all released within a 6 week time frame around the game's release:

- Release Date Reveal Teaser (~24k views on YT, ~20k views on FB)
- Making of Toxikk, The Weapons (~5k views on YT, ~16k views on FB)
- Making of Toxikk, The Maps (~3.7k views on YT, ~10k views on FB)
- Official Movement Tutorial (~40k views on YT, ~16k views on FB)
- Full Release Trailer (16.5k views on YT, ~12k views on FB)

Another trailer coming later today:

- Making of Toxikk, The Vehicles

Other activities:

- Feed Social Media (FB, Twitter, Reddit etc.) with every important news item
- Reach out to major YouTubers to ask them for co-op
- Send out press releases with every important date and trailer release
- Professionalize TOXIKK.com website to AAA standards

There's no such thing as a "do more marketing" button. We had a good reach and visibility. Press articles on Rock Paper Shotgun, PCGamer.com etc. Which is awesome for an indie title.

Unfortunately the press didn't really pick it up as expected. E.g. I don't understand why there's not one single review from bigger media outlets (Metacritic still says "0 Critics"), but maybe these are still coming. We can't force the press to write about us. If they think BF1 horses are more important than reviewing a new AFPS, there's not much we can do about that.

Having said that... yea, it's not nice, but we'll continue improving the game anyway and cater to our core community. We've always been working on this project for fun primarily and it's great to see that pretty much everybody loves the game... and that "lack of visibility & market reach" is the biggest complaint from our players... As that's the only thing we can't really change.

If you work in the gaming business and haven't heard anyting of Toxikk yet...

Re: Pro-League Backer Rewards 4 STEAM KEYS FOR TOXIKK FULL-G

I know we already discussed this on Discord (I think), but maybe other look into this too, so: No, the beta keys are not different from the full game keys. I.e. you can use the same keys from the beta for the full game.

It was put this way to avoid misunderstandings, as we previously had people asking if Beta and Early Access also include access to the full game (which is the case).

Founder Skins Coming!

Yea, yea... I know we're late shipping the remaining rewards (we only sent out the keys and issued the support forum badges). And we're sorry for that. We were simply too close to burn-out the week before release, to get to it.

Anyway, as I already replied to most of the questions about when the skins arrive, we're super grateful for the support of our founders. All skins will be sent out before the end of next week (i.e. before the end of September). You'll receive a DLC key that'll unlock either 1,2 or 3 skins (depending on your founder level). These will then be accessible through the customization menu.

Please excuse the delay... but Reakktor is a small studio with very limited resources.
Thanks for you support and your patience.

P.S.: Godlike founders will be asked to confirm their address and the name they want to be mentioned with in the credits of the game with the mail that contains the three skins.

Re: Great Game, but it will die. Playerbase declining.

Well, after all the marketing and PR stuff, it would actually be nice if some major PC gaming mag did a review on the game (or some "really" big YouTuber pickin' it up). But we have no influence on that. :(

Re: Connection to the server lost, and empty server browser

Sound like you lost connection with the steam socket.
Could you please give us a log file of a session when that happened?
You can obtain the log by looking at: \Steam\steamapps\common\TOXIKK\UDKGame\Logs The fastest way to get there would be to right click on toxikk in your steam library -> Properties -> Tab: Local Files -> "Browse Local Files..."
