  • Okay, since we were a little silent over the past couple of days, we think it's time to make stuff currently going on at Reakktor a bit more transparent and post an update about how the work on the next patch is coming along:


    GENERAL
    As we've reported before, one of our team members was in hospital for quite some time to have his herniated disk treated. Luckily, he's recovering well and even got done quite a bit of work already, so everything should be back to normal. Right now he's working on the map related bugs that were reported, so expect an update to the existing three maps with the next patch that hopefully gets everything reported out of the way.


    NEW MAPS
    With the Parsley build generation, we'll be releasing two new maps. The first one will be another jungle map and the "bonus" map will be a high tech sci-fi laboratory style map. While we're quite happy with the jungle map we were running into some small issues with the laboratory style map.

    Point is, that the lab style map will be the first map to feature our sci-fi asset set (at least to a full extent, ...there were already parts of it being used on Twin Peaks) and while all other sets (urban/dystopian, glacier/alpine and jungle/temple) could be well created by doing "real-world" visual research, the sci-fi asset set will be the first one where we had to create an "own" style. Aaaand... long story short: This was a little more difficult to achieve than we originally expected. But we're coming along nicely and I'd say that it's about 85% complete by now.

    However, this means that we are not going to release both maps with the V0.85 build, but start with the jungle map only and release the second map later this month with another update (probably V0.87), but still within the Parsley build generation of course.


    NEW GAME MODES
    We've announced two new game modes for the Parsley build: AR (Arch Rivals, i.e. Duel) and LS (Lone Survivor, i.e. Last Man Standing) and while both modes aren't particulary difficult to implement, we got carried away a bit by the idea of delivering a non-vehicle CC (CTF) mode first. We're currently preparing special versions of Foundation and Artifact to support the non-vehicle CC game mode. So expect this game mode to be delivered first (i.e. before AR and LS). But AR and LS will also be completed within the Parsley generation... (we need to expand the spectator functionalities a bit before we want to release those two modes).


    SKILL CLASS SYSTEM AKA MATCH MAKING
    We're trying a different approach on the match making stuff as we consider the (which most FPS matchmaking systems are based on) to be only partially useful. Our system (the Skill Class System / SCS) will rely on player behaviour more than only on winning and losing matches.

    However, this also has proven to be a bit more complicated than we originally expected, so expect the first implementation of the SCS to be somewhat flawed. This will be a process where we need to learn from seeing the system in action, before we'll be happy with it, but we believe that our approach is the most promising one.


    SDKK
    Just like the second map, the SDKK will follow later during the Parsley build generation. There are some issues that we need to get out of the way to make using the SDKK as easy and comfortable as possible.


    OTHER STUFF WE'RE LOOKING INTO
    We want to enable players to run their own ranked servers (besides ours) and we had some ideas how to achieve this while working on the SCS. We are currently doing some research on how this could be achieved best. This work is not in the beta roadmap but needs to be done as we keep getting inquiries about how to run an officially ranked server.

    We also currently work on unannounced features to have some surprises for the 1.0 full release version. Obviously, I cannot go into details regarding "surprise content", but we would like you to know that when things get delayed a bit, it's not only because of us being lazy bastards. ;)

    Around the 20th, we'll also take part in a little promotion action that we'll announce seperately and that should get a good bunch of new players in. So we want to make sure that the first version of the SCS is working by then to not have all of them being slaughtered on first sight by our pro players. So, the SCS really is a top priority for us.



    FINAL NOTE
    This was just a quick post for the sake of transparency. I don't have final release date for V0.85 yet, but it'll be announced soon™. The Parsley build generation really is a HUGE patch for the game, almost doubling the amount of game modes and maps. Taking the special versions of Artifact and Foundation for a non-vehicle CC into account, it even more than doubles the amount of maps.

    So, with all the required fixes to existing content etc. maybe we were a bit optimistic when we originally announced Parsley for late March. But we also wrote in the that it is a rough estimation and in constant flow. So please bear with us.

    Anyway, I hope this'll help you to understand things going on at KK a little better and if you have any questions feel free to post them here.

    Slower, but completed and awesome is always better than quick and sloppy. We are all looking forward to it and will be jumping in full force to help test. Especially excited to fully rip apart the SCS for ya.

  • It's nice of you to give us some informations on what's going on. Can't wait to try all this stuff, especially the ctf versions of foundation and artifact and the other jungle map.

    By the way, do you think you are done with weapon balance or will there still be some changes?
    The only one with (almost) no AFPS background.
