  • yeah it would be exactly like Cliffyb's Ownage.. Stuff like that increases interest in a game and strengthens its community. We do not need Cliffy to have our own map contests :yes:

  • The -apparant- level of misunderstanding or simply not knowing how old-school games like Q2/UT etc handled custom skins kind of amazes me. First of all, NO, id, for example, did not have to add custom skins or models or maps to the 'official' Quake2 game for other players to see it. To even suggest such a thing is preposterous.

    Has no one here even heard of such places as SkinCity, and others?

    Can you imagine all those being required to be installed in 'official' game to even work!! Of course not.

    This was a HUGE plus for games like Q2, UT, etc. It made the game so freaking' customizable it added to the fun for years. For example, when I was in a clan called MOO clan years ago, there was a cow model some folks would use. Funny stuff. And if you didn't like the cow model, you simply did not install it. Done and done. You would see a default model, and life went on. No harm no foul.

    There are FAQ's out there, but - It worked on a very basic level. If you see a skin you like, somewhere, anywhere online, you downloaded and installed it. Then you are free to go use it online. If your buddy also liked the skin, and installed it, then you will both see it online.

    Or, you could have had the server admin put them in the serverpackages, and everyone will get it from the server when they join.

    Worded another way, hoping to make this clear;

    --
    Case 1)
    One user has a custom skin which is not in the server packages - then only that user sees the correct image, other clients see the default

    Case2)
    Two or more users have the same skin which is not in the server packages - Here any users that have the skin will see the correct one, all others will see default.

    Case3)
    User's custom skin added to Serverpacakges - Server downloads skin to all clients (upon connecting), all clients see correct skin

    Whew! I'm really trying to be polite, but this is/was very basic stuff guys. It's the kind of thread that would often get a big pic of Picard doing a face-palm.
