[NEWS] Shift-Key Dodge Implemented

  • We followed the about the pros and cons regarding the shift-key as a dodge move modifier (shift-dodging) and we believe that both sides have valid reasons (and sentiments) towards its implementation. However, we believe that one of the bigger problems for Arena-FPS games is/was the skill gap between people who grew up with games like UT and those who are fresh to the genre. Since it's one of our goals to expand the audience for Arena-FPS titles, we implemented shift-dodging, as it feels like a natural movement scheme expansion to us.

    We've played around with it and we don't think that the argument of shift-dodging being easier to execute than double-tap dodging is valid (except for forward dodging). It's simply a different approach... and to many gamers new to the Arena-FPS genre, it'll be the more logical approach: Simply press a direction key (W,A,S or D) and the shift key and you'll perform a dodge towards the desired direction.

    However, the old-shool double-tap system will remain in place too. So, if you prefer double-tap dodging, you may as well stick to that.

    To those who believe that it's generally easier to perform a shift-dodge: Think of a situation where you want to do a wall-dodge combined with a jump. Using the shift-dodge you jump against a wall, press shift, press the direction key and press space. With the traditional dodge, you jump against the wall, double tap towards the desired direction and press space. Both methods are easy to learn, but pretty hard to master (with the traditional method being somewhat easier in our opinion).

    TL;DR: Shift-dodging will be in the game from day one on.

  • Great. I always, if possible, prefer modifier key for dodge, sprint etc etc to avoid any accidental things from happening.

  • Another fair and considered decision - thanks.

    If Shift+Dodge did prove to be too much of an advantage during EA, you could always consider making it perform a slightly smaller dodge than double-tap.

    It will be interesting to see if the 'competition' implement this. ;)

  • Thanks for listening. I think having more movement options will help to support more players. I'm super excited to play around with it. I will probably end up using both.
