Working on visual themes for the world of Toxikk is a job we absolutely love. We enjoy working out all the details that make a map believable ...and It's awesome to see a new theme evolve.
While trying to keep all themes within one and the same "look" (i.e. they are all placed in the "same world"), our demands and expectations grew with every theme completed. We strive for visual clarity, while not losing (or even adding to) a high level of detail. You'll see what I'm talking about, when I can show some screenshots.
And yea,... we love detailing out the themes, but it's also a demanding and very time consuming challenge. You can tell that it's a tough job, when looking at some of the other games currently in development. Although also being worked on for quite some time, some of them seem to have a hard time finding a visual identity (or even creating just ONE fully fleshed out visual theme).
TOXIKK features 3 visual themes right now:
A) alpine / arctic
B) jungle / temple / ancient
C) dystopian / urban / ghetto
...and will feature an overall of five themes when 1.0 lands. Both "final" themes are currently in development:
D) clean / sci-fi / laboratory
E) mediterranean / historic
Spread over nine maps, these 5 visual themes do not only grant visual variety, but will also be an awesome base for community made maps. E.g., combining elements of the dystopian/urban set with elements of the sci-fi/laboartory might make up for an industrial or military base themed map. Or combine mediterranean/historic with jungle/ancient to create a carrebean village... Your creativity decides. With the themes provided, the possibilities are almost endless. Plus, you can also add to the themes with your own assets.
