  • I see these device threads quite interesting and usefull. First of all it lets me see what gear people are running and it gives insight to someone who is maybe between something.

-Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum ( i am happy whenever i get to type down my soundcard that is like the longest named soundcard ever :D )

-Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 OHM stereo headphones (i use my soundcards "Optimize 3-D effects for headphones", not CMSS)

  • I'm currently using my poor built-in Realtek HD Audio sound card with my (also poor) Logitech S-120 speakers :( , but as I prefer to listen to music with my "real" receiver + speakers in my living room, I use my Superlux 681-B (plus a Zalman MIC-1 for communication) for gaming most of the time.
BTW, without wanting to advertise them, if you're looking for cheap headphones for gaming purposes get the Superlux 681 Evo, they're no-brainers for around 20 bucks depending on your currency. Combined with a microphone like my Zalman mentioned above or the Antlion Modmic, they outperform almost every so-called "gaming" headset up to 150 $.

Although I love my headset-mic-combo, I've been thinking about upgrading to Beyerdynamic headphones (+a new sound card) for quite a while now as they really seem to kick ass.

  • Speakers - Bose Companion 20
    Headphones - Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80 Ohm
    Mic - Antlion Modmic 4.0
    DAC/AMP - Fiio E17

Very satisfied with all these things. Has had them for a good while.
The speakers are great as standalone speakers with no sub. I'd love to have a larger setup with a mean sub, but I live in an apartment, so I don't wanna subject neighbors to that. They're great for what they are (small PC speakers for apartments). They are reasonably loud, and there's a surprising amount of bass for their size.

The headphones are great too, but as opposed to seemingly everyone else, I don't find the "standard" bass amount to be enough. With my dac/amp it's good though, but it's only when I put on pleather earpads that the bass is as "insane" as everyone claims it to be. The pleather earpads I have aren't very comfortable though, so I've stuck to the standard velour pads. All other aspects of the sound is better with them too, as they were made for them in the first place.
If I had the money, I'd buy a pair of V-moda M-100. Then I'd have headphones for heavy bass, and my DT770 for everything else.

The mic is great. Not much to say about it. Combining it with a pair of good headphones will beat any "gaming" headset, with the possible exception of the Audio Technica ATH-A(D)G1, as they're the only decent gaming headset I've seen (and they haven't even launched everywhere yet (and they're much more expensive than any other gaming headset)).

The DAC/AMP is also very nice. The DAC part makes certain that I won't have any noise (which I've had in the past because of bad mobo AUX connections) and outputs the sound completely undistorted by the mobo or any drivers that might try to affect the signal. The AMP part amplifies the sound (du'h) and I've got options to boost bass and treble in many steps, which is a feature I love to have. It's beyond what any equalizer could do.
It's also great for improving the sound of my phone when I'm on vacation or long trips. Really makes a difference with a phone. Just can't be bothered to take it with me all the time.

  • I prefer my Yamaha Receiver and Surround sound setup I have for music and movies. That being said everything I have in my setup is geared toward gaming.

Sound Card: Asus DGX $35US <---- totally worth it for GAMING ONLY not for music or movies etc etc.....
    AMP: FiiO E9
Headphones: AKG701's AMAZING HEADSET! Took me a couple months on deciding between the beyers990 and the AKG 701's I chose the AKG's.
    MIC: Antlion Modmic 4.0

I did own the Asus Essence STX but after some research I returned it as it was WAY OVERKILL for just gaming. The DGX has the Dolby Headphone and is just as good as the STX (minus the built-in amp of course).

Here's what I learned about sound. I always ALWAYS used cheap stuff and never cared. Once I tried DH(DolbyHeadphone) and with the above headphones. I was completely blown away it was seriously a NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENCE. Very Distinguishable between cheapo way to go and investing a couple hundred one time. Try the Asus DGX its very cheap and has DH you will notice a difference. Use a pair of audiophile headphones (nothing insane but in the $100-$200 range) not only will they last forever but I promise you will be mind blown.

I am the type of person who just goes with what works as to me if the difference isn't huge it's not worth it. Well again I IMMEDIATELY noticed a massive change. Changed the way I play every and any game from here on out.

A buddy stopped by he doesn't game much but he tried a game on my PC with my headphones and immediately took them and off and just looked at and said "wtf kind of headphones are these? shit!"
